Editorial August 2012

Written by Nell Merionwen

August has rolled in on a wave of summer showers. With the promise of some sunshine, here at downsizer we are holding our collective breath in anticipation.

This summer is a busy time all around. We cannot fail to notice the Olympics but we also find there is plenty to do and see here in our own space.

July brought us a plethora of good things. We have had a good and hearty soaking but that was followed with some much needed warmth. Now the weeds are racing for space among the fruit and veg.

If you are finding the race a chore do have a look at things to do on the plot in August for inspiration and some solid advice. Equally feel free to brows the forum to both offer words of wisdom and find some time served hints and tips.

We also enjoyed one of our annual skill share gatherings. Friends were met and made, both new and old. Cake was eaten and wine was enjoyed.

Happily, amongst the cheery organised chaos some skills were shared. You can see the results of these skills in the most recent articles in our repertoire.

From making lip balm, knitting shawls, and foraging you can find it all here.

Not forgetting the recipes that were shared and filled the happy clan. We were lucky enough to enjoy such goodies as homemade gingerbread, olive and anchovy bites, sweet and sour pork and homemade mutton burgers. Along side many other wonderful things.

With August being a time of plenty, you will find your larders are starting to burst at the seams. You can find all you need here at downsizer to instruct you in the art of storage and preserving for the months ahead. From curing meat to jams, pickles and preserves it is all here.

Due to the longer summer days there is always a glut of eggs. Find advice on poultry keeping, rearing and processing from our many experts. There are articles aplenty and advice to be found on the friendly forum.

Feel free to sign up here and, please, enjoy the show.
