  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1/4 cup split peas or other bean/pulse
  • 200g lamb mince
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • salt
  • chilli
  • If you don't have the spices listed below just use a tsp of garam masala
  • Optional:
  • 1 stick cassia/cinammon
  • 2 black cardomoms
  • 3 or 4 cloves
  • 3 or 4 peppercorns
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 2 bay leaves
Method/steps
  1. Precook the split peas, whole lentils or beans as per instructions.
  2. Fry the onions and garlic in the oil until softened
  3. Add the spices and cook vigorously, allowing the onions to brown around the edges
  4. Add the mince keep cooking on high until the mince has browned thoroughly
  5. Add the beans/pulses, salt and chilli to taste.
  6. Add rice, stir
  7. Add 2 cups boiling water, turn hob to minimum and put lid on saucepan.
  8. Cook gently till water has been absorbed, at least 15 minutes but maybe up to 20.
