Editorial Autumn 2015

Written by Nell Merionwen

All too soon the nights are drawing in as Autumn starts to peek its nose over the horizon.

We, at downsizer are still cleaving to the last flush of summer with the hope of a few warm days, but there is no denying there is a chill on the breeze.

Autumn is a time of gathering and harvest in the world of sustainable living. Thus, we are all busy, busy, busy on the plots. Have a look here for inspiration to keep yourself on the straight and narrow. Don't forget to save your seeds ready for next year. Maybe you could save them in your own origami seed packets.

All in all, it is this time of year that is traditionally a time of plenty. You may find yourselves with a hearty stock of vegetables to see you through the winter. Have a look at this article to find inspiration on storing your produce.

However, for those of us who like to bolster our stores with found and foraged goods you will find the hedgerows heaving with fruits, and the fungi is popping up all over the place. Do have a look here to find oodles of information and inspiration to keep you both busy and safe.

Then, when you have filled your baskets with berries, it is worth seeking out some of our expert advice on jam and jelly making for both recipes and know how.

If, however like many of us, you wish to utilise the fruits for something wholly more scandalous, have a look at the guide to wine making for all you will need. It will certainly help keep your toes warm over the coming months!

If, you wish for a more traditional way to keep those tootsies toasty, have a look at our how-to article on making felted slippers; or indeed, fend off the cool breeze in a hand made shawl as you enjoy the last of the sunshine.

We all know, only too well, how it is easy to hearken after the summer. But, here at downsizer we find autumn is a time of bounty, colour and plenty.

Please feel free to sign up and share your plans, stories, expertise or simply seek advice from our friendly forum.
